Chapter Thirteen
Miss Spencer was preparing to leave the London townhouse as the duke came in later that evening.
After taking Miss Bryce for a second round of ices, Dare had met with his man of business in London. They had spent hours assessing the latest information provided by the thieftakers whose services had not yet been dismissed. Compiled with the information Dare had gleaned on his visits with Cassie, they were left with⦠an unsolved mystery.
Mr. Ezra Goldman, his man of business, was a wise and thoughtful man, but by the conclusion of the afternoon had admitted he believed they were not much further along than when they had started. Lady Briar was still lost and her whereabouts a mysteryâthough it seemed Dare had conclusively confirmed once and for all that she must be somewhere in London.
That is, if the nefarious man mentioned by Moe had not swept her off to some other location.
In fact, Dare had planned to lay all the facts before Miss Spencer that eveningâheadache or notâand beg her to help him. They had been going their separate ways on this for long enough. If Miss Spencer truly believed Scotland was the answer⦠well, Dare was now desperate enough to send men to Scotland. He would send them anywhere in the world.
He felt exhausted and dazed. The blood on his knuckles had dried, but he was left still feeling the desperate urge to pummel something again. His head hurt, and he had not slept properly since he had last seen his sister.
And yet, he saw with amazement, here was Miss Spencer hurrying out of the house.
She was pulling a cloak carefully around her shoulders and drawing up the hood as she stepped outside.
Dare hopped down quickly from the carriage. âMiss Spencer, surely you are not leaving! I had very much wished to speak with you.â He could not help but frown. âI was⦠disappointed⦠that you did not join us this morning. How is your head?â
âMy head?â Miss Spencer said, looking puzzled. âOh, yes! My head is much better, thank-you. What had you wished to speak with me about, Your Grace?â
âAbout Briar. About your brother. About what Cassie and I learned this morning, of course,â Dare said, scowling. âThere is a puzzle to be solved and no time to be lost. And yet, Miss Spencer, are you truly going out? To a social engagement?â
Miss Spencer looked uncomfortable. âIâm afraid I am, Your Grace, yes. It cannot be helped. I have made a commitment and cannot break it.â
âBut, surelyâ¦â Dare began.
âI really must go, Your Grace,â she insisted, pulling her cloak more tightly around her. âAh, I see a hackney!â
She slipped quickly down the steps without another word, gesturing to the hack with a graceful wave of her hand. It slowed just as she reached it. She stepped in and was gone.
